This was, literally, the trip of a lifetime to Alaska. We went with a friend’s family, who are all photographers and have been to Alaska a number of times, so we had people that really knew the ropes, where to go and what to do. We went to Hoonah and Wrangell, two towns on the Inside Passage, and spent the trip fishing for our meals and photographing whales, bears, eagles, seals and more.
Getting a picture of a breaching whale is a challenge, mainly because you don’t know when or where it is going to happen, so you have to be ready at all times with your finger on the shutter button. We were on a boat with six other people, and each one of us was covering a part of the horizon and would call out as it was happening.
Scuba Sue
So named by the rangers because she would spend so much time underwater fishing (and quite successfully!)
Most of the days we were in Alaska were cloudy and rainy, but this did not take away from the experience. It also provided an opportunity for some moody type of photographs. This is a compilation of about 10 different photographs merged together to create this panorama. What made it even more challenging was doing it on a rocking boat!
